Dr. Hyder Lashari

Dr. Hyder Lashari is a Sindhi scholar, activist, writer and thinker whose lifelong struggle has been to promote peace, love, non-violence, coexistence, social justice and human dignity — rooted in the universal message of humanity that underpins the politics and philosophy of G. M. Syed, the father of the Sindhi nationalist movement. His work is deeply influenced by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan), Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, leaders whose commitment to non-violence, civil rights and human development shaped global peace movements in the 20th century.

Dr. Lashari’s intellectual and public life has been devoted to promoting the core principles of justice, democracy, tolerance and the right to self-determination for Sindhis within a framework of world unity and universal human development — in harmony with both local identity and global peace.

Dr. Lashari’s activism began at a young age. At just 16 years old (around 1980) he aligned himself with G. M. Syed’s vision and became actively involved in the Jeay Sindh movement, a Sindhi nationalist struggle advocating the cultural rights and political self-determination of Sindhis. Over decades he became known as a leading intellectual voice within the movement, focusing on study circles, political training, seminars, workshops and publications aimed at educating Sindhi youth and building an intellectual culture grounded in non-violence and democratic ideals.

Under his leadership, youth were encouraged to critically engage with ideas of identity, cultural rights and peaceful resistance — reflecting the synthesis of Sindhi tradition with global humanist thought.

On 15 August 2008, Dr. Hyder Lashari and other intellectuals founded the G. M. Syed Studies Board in Sann (Sindh) with the mission of preserving, interpreting and promoting the philosophical legacy of G. M. Syed and his message of freedom, democracy, justice, religious tolerance, peace and non-violence.

He was appointed the first Chairman of the Board (2008–2010), and after many years of ongoing work and scholarship, he was re-elected Chairman on 17 January 2026 for the term 2026–2029, reaffirming his central role in Sindhi intellectual and cultural movements.

The Board convenes scholars, writers and activists, organizes conferences and publishes research that connects Sindh’s political history to contemporary human rights and peace discourses.

Dr. Lashari is a prolific writer and researcher. Over his lifetime he has authored 17 books and hundreds of articles, including research papers and constitutional writings, spanning politics, history, philosophy and human rights. His work has been published in multiple languages, including Urdu and Sindhi.

One of his most notable scholarly works is the biography of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan), a figure revered throughout South Asia for his unwavering commitment to non-violence and social justice. He first published this detailed biography in 2008 (432 pages, in Urdu) and later expanded and republished an extended edition in 2012 (540 pages) through the Bacha Khan Research Center, Peshawar.

His works are studied in academic and activist circles across Pakistan, South Asia and the global Sindhi diaspora.

In 2017, in recognition of his contribution to Sindhi identity, culture and the movement for Sindhi rights, Dr. Hyder Lashari was honored with the prestigious G. M. Syed Memorial Award, recognizing his tireless advocacy for democracy, civil rights, and the freedom of Sindhi peoples, as well as his prolific literary and grassroots work.

This fusion has made him a unique voice in South Asian intellectual and political discourse, one focused on justice through dialogue, peace through understanding, and identity through dignity.
